3rd Annual Artists Party at Tomoka @ Tomoka State Park

The Florida Women's Arts Association (FLWAA) and Tomoka State Park are proud to host the Third Annual Artist’s Party and Paint-Out at Tomoka State Park. We invite artists working in any media to participate on Saturday and Sunday, Jan 7th and 8th, 2017 from 8:00am to 4:00pm.  For information and pre-registration, please call Marianne Verna at 435-773-1700.  FLWAA members are admitted free and “not yet” members will pay a $10.00 artist participant fee (includes park entrance). Onsite registration begins at 8am on Saturday, January 7th at the recreation hall building inside Tomoka State Park.

The two-day event will include artist workshops, live models, onsite painting locations and refreshments. Artist's work will be displayed in the recreation hall throughout the weekend and will also be available for sale. So bring the family and get to know your local artists and see creativity come to life. Then spend the day exploring Tomoka State Park on your own; have a picnic, canoe/kayak along the Tomoka River or just relax with your family. Visit Captain Scott at the park store, Tomoka Outpost, for canoe/kayak and fishing equipment rentals, snacks, various sundries and more (now serving beer and wine). Tomoka State Park is located at 2099 North Beach Street in Ormond Beach.

If you're interested in taking your next camping venture beyond the campground, but you're not ready to make the trip on your own, then join one of our rangers on a group overnight hike just off the beaten prairie path.  Journey along biologically and historically unique areas, and learn about the Prairie's relationship to people of the past, present, and future.

This overnight trip is a moderately strenuous hike of approximately 6.5 miles over level to slightly rolling terrain.  The pack in, pack out hike begins Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, and concludes on the following Sunday around Noon at the starting point.

Participants will be responsible for packing in (and out) their own camping equipment, food, and water.  A campfire will be provided at the campsite.  There are no sources of drinking water along the trail or at the campsite.

Fee to Attend: $15 Per Person

The hike is strictly limited to 20 people, and prepaid online registrations are required.

Hike requires a minimum of 5 participants in the total group for the program to happen; if 5 participants do not go, the hike will be cancelled and each participant will be contacted and refunded.

This hike is not recommended for children under 10.

No pets permitted.

As you roam down the short trail to the Cow Camp, you will travel back in time to 1876. At the end of the trail, you will find a Florida Cow Hunter in a frontier camp along the route of a cattle drive. He will be cooking, making coffee, tending to the cattle or just resting up until the next roundup or cattle drive. The Cow Hunter will be very happy to share stories about what his life is like and the challenges he faces.

181st Anniversary of Dade's Battle, the beginning of the Second Seminole War.  Reenactment includes period soldiers, Seminole and civilian camps, sutler trade fair, historic arts and crafts demonstrations, full scale cannon firing, tree cutting and barricade building, and 19th century games and activities for children.  Battle at 2 p.m.

This program will allow visitors to interact with living historians to experience life in the fort as it was in 1864. This weekly program is offered during bald eagle nesting season. Two nests are located in the park but the easiest to access is on the Green Trail. Once nest construction has begun, part of the trails are roped off per federal law. To view the eagles from a safe distance, a Volunteer will be manning a viewing station. A high-powered spotting scope to view the nest will be provided. The 20-minute walk to the eagle viewing station on the Green Trail from the Nature Center or campground is self-guided and trail maps can be obtained at the Ranger Station and Nature Center.

Visit the gardens at Silver Springs State Park, on the 2nd Sunday of each month, for our Garden Tour. Join a park ranger for information about the gardens' history, learn about the different seasonal flowers and blooms, as well as about pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies. The tour passes through the following gardens: Courtyard Garden, Crossroads Garden, Camellia Garden, Fire & Water Garden, and the tour ends at the Wildflower Garden. After the tour, visitors are free to continue exploring the garden pathways and trails or walk back along the river.

End your weekend on the perfect note with an evening of great music under the moonlight as The Barnacle Society presents Four Shillings Short. The husband/wife duo of Aodh Og O’Tuama from Cork, Ireland and Christy Martin from California, have been performing together since 1995.  They tour in the US and Ireland, are independent folk-artists with 12 recordings, perform 150 concerts a year and live as the Troubadours of old. Rooted in Celtic and American folk, their performances are inspired by Indian Raga and Ethnic idioms—a diverse and inventive Traditonal Music Experience.
