As you roam down the short trail to the Cow Camp, you will travel back in time to 1876. At the end of the trail, you will find a Florida Cow Hunter in a frontier camp along the route of a cattle drive. He will be cooking, making coffee, tending to the cattle or just resting up until the next roundup or cattle drive. The Cow Hunter will be very happy to share stories about what his life is like and the challenges he faces.

Many people say the only way to experience the beauty and diversity of the Fakahatchee Strand is to immerse yourself in it. For many visitors, an official Friends of Fakahatchee Swamp Walk is the highlight of their Florida visit. Accompanied by experienced guides, participants wade in cool water up to their waists for half a day observing the native wildlife and plants in the Fakahatchee Strand. This is a long, strenuous walk into the heart of the Fakahatchee. Participants will be required to sign a standard release of liabilty form. Saturday swamp walks on Nov. 19, Dec. 10, Jan. 14. Feb. 11, Feb. 20, March 11, and April 8 will be led by Park Biologist Mike Owen. All other swamp walks will be led by trained Friends of Fakahatchee naturalists. Participants meet at the Ranger Station off Janes’ Scenic Drive no later than 9:30 a.m. It is located at 137 Coastline Drive, Copeland, FL. The park entrance is on the west side of SR 29 between I-75 and U.S. 41. This is the only access to Janes Scenic Drive. Please DO NOT rely on GPS or Google Map info which may incorrectly show other routes.

Swamp walkers should wear long pants and lace-up boots or sneakers (no waders or open-top boots). A hat and long-sleeved shirt are also recommended. Bring water, snacks, or lunch. Bring bug repellent if you are sensitive. Put anything you do not want to get wet in zip-lock plastic bags. You will also want to have a change of clothes to leave in your car for a more comfortable trip home. The park entrance is on the west side of SR 29 between I-75 and U.S. 41. Paddle into the sunset by kayak on the scenic Silver River. Every Saturday, a ranger will present a program on a different topic at the Silver River Museum & Environmental Education Center. Examples of programs include "Weavers in the woods," "What's that sound?," "Pioneer survival," as well as programs on topics such as fire, gopher tortoises and more. For the specific topic or program for the coming weekend, please contact the ranger station.

An Evening Under The Stars @ Big Lagoon State Park

The gazes themselves are free; however normal park entrance fees apply. 

All participants MUST have entered the park prior to closing time; which is sunset.  The front gates will be locked at that time, and visitors will NOT be permitted to enter the park after then. 

NOTE: as sunset times do change throughout the year, please contact the Ranger Station at (850) 492-1595 ahead of time to find out when the front gates will be locking for the evening.

Big Lagoon State Park, along with the Escambia Amateur Astronomer Association would like to invite you to spend an evening gazing at the skies!  Clear weather permitting, members of the Association will set up telescopes and binoculars to capture views of the moon, planets, and other celestial objects.  The event will be held at the East Beach Picnic Area, near the observation tower at Big Lagoon State Park.

Guided Night Paddle @ Oscar Scherer State Park

Awaken your senses with the wonders of the nocturnal world while park staff guide you along a gentle paddle among the fragile estuarine mangrove habitat of South Creek. Participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to sunset to get set-up. Space is limited to ten vessels and is on a first-come, first-served basis, so register early (up to one month prior to the paddle date). Canoes, kayaks, paddles and life jackets are available for rent at the park. Folks are welcome to bring their own paddling gear instead of renting.

Time varies based on sunset - contact park for actual times.

Caroling the Ravines featuring Luminaries by the Pilot Club @ Ravine Gardens State Park

You are invited to Ravine Gardens State Park's 9th Annual Christmas event!  Visitors will be treated to a light show set to music, live entertainment, luminaries in the gardens, and much more!  Take a wagon ride around the park to view the festive lights. Enjoy performances by local musicians, bands, and choir groups.  Get your Christmas shopping done early by visiting local vendors.  Photos with Santa will be available and the proceeds will benefit the Friends of Ravine Gardens.

Food will be available for purchase during the event.

Luminaries will be on sale for $5 each.  Each luminaire can feature your own personalized message or dedication.  Proceeds from the luminaries will benefit local projects by the Pilot Club of Palatka.

Fort Foster Candlelight Event @ Fort Foster State Historic Site

Fort Foster Historic Site brings the holiday season on the Florida Frontier to life! Visitors follow a lantern-lit trail through the military fort and Seminole camp. Along the way, guests will encounter musicians, living history scenarios, and refreshments.

A battle reenactment on Friday, December 9th, and Saturday, December 10th, will take place after 8:00 pm. Come witness the drama as the Seminoles attempt to burn the bridge crossing the Hillsborough River, while soldiers and militiamen will try to defend it. This living history program will truly take you back in time.

The Fort Foster State Historic Site is located adjacent to Hillsborough River State Park on U.S. 301 North, 9 miles north of Fowler Avenue and 6 miles south of Zephyrhills.

Come sit around the campfire and find out about the amazing world around you.  This informative family-friendly program takes place in the best classroom---the outdoors with the theme changing weekly! The wheelchair accessible campfire circle is located between sites 35 and 36. Held in the Nature Center if inclement weather.

Premier Birder David Simpson Buggy Tour @ Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

Come join Premier Florida birding guide, David Simpson on his 4 Swamp Buggy tours at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park! David Simpson is one of Florida's most renowned premier birding guides and has vast experience working in Kissimmee Prairie as a Florida Grasshopper Sparrow technician and as a natural land resource manager. He helps to preserve and restore the globally imperiled Florida Dry Prairie ecosystem. He will be guiding 4 swamp buggy tours on the following dates: 12/11/16, 1/08/17, 2/19/17 and 3/19/17. There will be two tours given per day, one at 8:30am and one at 2:00pm. You can make reservations over the phone by calling the KPPSP office at, 863-462-5360 during our regular office hours of 8am-4pm on weekdays and 8am-2pm on weekends.

Please arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to pay the buggy tour fee. If you are an experienced or novice birder you will not want to miss this opportunity to ride along with David Simpson as he traverses the Florida Dry Prairie ecosystem pointing out the many various birds with his keen eye and his premier birding intellect! Please dress for the weather, bring drinking water and any other items to help you look at various wildlife. Some binoculars are available for use, you are more than welcome to bring your own also.
