During this weekend of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission's Rock Spring Wildlife Management Area Small Game Hunt, the park is open for normal activities. However, to protect our visitors, some trails will be closed. All hunting areas and trail closures will be clearly posted. Take a fascinating journey by van into the Ichetucknee forest, to the site of the 17th Century Mission de San Martin de Timucua.  Learn all about the ancient Timucuan capital of Aquacalyquen.  This special interpretive program is space-limited, and reservations are recommended.  The tour will begin at the Head Spring parking lot, at the North Entrance off Elim Church Road (County Road 238).

As you roam down the short trail to the Cow Camp, you will travel back in time to 1876. At the end of the trail, you will find a Florida Cow Hunter in a frontier camp along the route of a cattle drive. He will be cooking, making coffee, tending to the cattle or just resting up until the next roundup or cattle drive. The Cow Hunter will be very happy to share stories about what his life is like and the challenges he faces.

Many people say the only way to experience the beauty and diversity of the Fakahatchee Strand is to immerse yourself in it. For many visitors, an official Friends of Fakahatchee Swamp Walk is the highlight of their Florida visit. Accompanied by experienced guides, participants wade in cool water up to their waists for half a day observing the native wildlife and plants in the Fakahatchee Strand. This is a long, strenuous walk into the heart of the Fakahatchee. Participants will be required to sign a standard release of liabilty form. Saturday swamp walks on Nov. 19, Dec. 10, Jan. 14. Feb. 11, Feb. 20, March 11, and April 8 will be led by Park Biologist Mike Owen. All other swamp walks will be led by trained Friends of Fakahatchee naturalists. Participants meet at the Ranger Station off Janes’ Scenic Drive no later than 9:30 a.m. It is located at 137 Coastline Drive, Copeland, FL. The park entrance is on the west side of SR 29 between I-75 and U.S. 41. This is the only access to Janes Scenic Drive. Please DO NOT rely on GPS or Google Map info which may incorrectly show other routes.

Swamp walkers should wear long pants and lace-up boots or sneakers (no waders or open-top boots). A hat and long-sleeved shirt are also recommended. Bring water, snacks, or lunch. Bring bug repellent if you are sensitive. Put anything you do not want to get wet in zip-lock plastic bags. You will also want to have a change of clothes to leave in your car for a more comfortable trip home. The park entrance is on the west side of SR 29 between I-75 and U.S. 41. Mark your calendars because Lovers Key State Park will host the Annual Great Outdoor Adventure Day on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016, located at the Kayak Launch/Picnic Area of the park. Food, touch tanks, children’s activities, as well as Ranger-led programs will highlight the fun-filled day geared towards encouraging participants to recreate responsibly while enjoying the park’s unique habitats and wide variety of wildlife. Rangers and volunteers will offer opportunities to see the park through programs such as guided kayak tours, walking nature tours, bike tours (bike and helmets provided), geo-caching, fishing clinics, and more! Exhibitors will include local environmental organizations, as well as outdoor equipment and healthy lifestyle vendors. Great Door Prizes will be given away throughout the event. Make sure to check out one of the exciting paddle boarding clinics for kids, beginners, and advanced paddlers!

For those young people or young at heart, pick up a Junior Ranger Activity Kit and start the self-guided program to earn yourself a certificate, member card, and earn a Junior Ranger patch, badge, or pin!  There will also be lots of children’s activities throughout the event as well as a Scavenger Hunt.

The park will host a presentation by author Lu Vickers based on the book Cypress Gardens, America’s Tropical Wonderland: How Dick Pope Invented Florida, published by the University Press of Florida. The presentation will feature vintage photographs and short films from the Cypress Gardens archives as well as souvenirs from the former attraction. The author will also sign copies of the book.

In 2001, Dick Pope was posthumously inducted into the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame, as part of their inaugural class of inductees, for his key role in the development of tourism in the state of Florida, and the growth of theme parks as tourist destinations.

Lu Vickers recently co-authored Remembering Paradise Park: Tourism and Segregation at Silver Springs and is the co-author of Weeki Wachee Mermaids: Thirty Years of Underwater Photography, as well as the author of Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids, and the novel Breathing Underwater. Lu was the recipient of two Florida Book Awards in 2010 and 2012.

Paddle into the sunset by kayak on the scenic Silver River.
