Kayaking 201 @ Dunns Creek State Park

The Friends of Dunns Creek State Park are excited to host their Kayaking 201 program!  This program is designed for anyone interested in kayaking, and would like to take a step above the Kayaking 101 class.  An instructor certified by the American Canoe Association will teach you the basics of kayaking along with water rescue techniques during this three hour session.  You will learn kayak safety, boarding kayaks, paddling strokes, basic paddling maneuvers, and water rescue techniques.

The training is limited to 6 participants and is $25 per person.  Kayak, paddle, and Personal Flotation Device (PFD) rentals are included in the training fee.  No children under 14 years of age please.  Children 14-17 are able to participate ONLY with a registered parent/guardian accompanying them.  Kayaking is a water sport so expect to get wet and dress accordingly.  There are no refunds available for the training, unless another participant can fill the spot.

Directions:  The training will be held on Lake Broward at the Lake Broward Recreation Area on N. Broward Avenue in Pomona Park near Dunns Creek State Park.

The timeline for this event will be necessarily precise:

4PM - MKR house tour (optional, $3 per person, and lasting 45 minutes.)

5PM - Check-in and a pork BBQ supper from Pearl's Country Store served promptly at 5PM at the county park adjacent to MKR state park.

5:45PM - Departure by bus to Antioch Cemetery.

6:15PM - Arrival at Antioch Cemetery for a tribute to those mentioned in Cross Creek, with a narrated guide of grave sites.

7:10PM - Return bus departs for county park.

7:30PM - Dessert social with Evadne's Gingerbread made from the Cross Creek Cookery recipe.

8:00PM - Event close.

This event is part of the Year of Cross Creek, a community-wide celebration of the 75th anniversary of the publication of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' books Cross Creek and Cross Creek Cookery.  Watch for more events to be listed here during the coming year.

Maclay Gardens State Park would like to invite you and your family out for a one of a kind hayride.  Come enjoy a hayride down the majestic brick path of the gardens where you will get to view unique and creative scarecrows.  We will be briefly stopping at each scarecrow so you can really see the details and artwork.  After the hayride participants will have the chance to vote for their favorite scarecrow to receive the People's Choice Award!

Pepper Creek Trail is transformed for a Spooky Tram Ride. The event is located behind the Visitor Center on US 19 with the Haunted Tram Rides along Pepper Creek Trail. The Grim Reaper's Haven is the theme of a Haunted House in the Florida Room. Costume Contests are scheduled for both evenings in the Visitor Center. The Departments of Environmental Protection's Eden Gardens State Park will host a Star Gazing program on October 28th, 2016. Volunteers from the Northwest Florida Astronomy Association will set up several telescopes for public viewing of star clusters, planets and galaxies. They will also answer questions about the night sky. All ages are invited to enjoy an evening of star gazing. The park will close at sunset at 6:00 pm. The JCI Ocala Jaycees present the 44th Annual Haunted House in partnership with Silver Springs State Park, every Friday and Saturday evening in October.

This will be an evening of fun and fear and will feature multiple scare zones as well as food and drink service.

No costumes or masks permitted. This is a scary event and may not be suitable for young children. Please read participation requirements in the additional information section.

Additional Information:

Enter the park through the main entrance located at 5656 East Silver Springs Blvd. (SR 40). The gates will be closed promptly at 10:00 p.m. and no new visitors will be allowed entry. Visitors that have already participated will be able to exit through a one-way gate.
