Come and see history in the making. Mote Marine Laboratory is transplanting 5,500 pieces of coral just offshore from Fort Zachary Taylor beach. "The goal is to build interest in coral reefs and have people understand why they are so important and what role they play in the marine ecosystem." Mote has partnered with the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in this exciting project. Visitors can volunteer at the Mote tent on the beach to assist with the transplanting. Mote will plant 5,000 boulder and brain corals and 500 staghorn corals. Mote plans on putting a sign in the park to detail the importance of coral reefs and to show where it is located so visitors can explore their work. Work continues weather permitting. Call park or Mote Marine Labs for more information.
