Highlands Hammock is off and running!  Running enthusiasts may join the Central Florida Striders in the 3rd Annual Summer Sunrise 5K Series.  The series of four races is set to begin Saturday morning, June 4, 2016.  The remaining three races are scheduled for June 25, July 16, and August  6.  The start time for all races is 7:00 a.m.

Come out to St. George Island State Park on Saturday, June 4th 2016 to participate in a Women's Fishing Clinic presented by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).  This is a one-day, shore based event designed to introduce women to saltwater fishing and educate participants on how to be responsible, ethical stewards if Florida's marine resources.  A variety of skill stations and lecture topics are offered and include inshore fishing, cast netting, knot tying, conservation and more.  The day ends with an opportunity for all participants to put their newly learned skills to work as they fish from shore.  Fishing equipment is loaned during the fishing clinic, but you may bring your own gear.  All participants must pre-register for the event by contacting Heather Sneed at (850) 487-0554 or Heather.Sneed@MyFWC.com.   This is a catch and release only event.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid recreational saltwater fishing license unless exempt.

This program is designed to introduce children of all ages to fishing through family interaction.  Participants and their families are rotated through different stations. After learning different aspects of freshwater fishing, the participants will fish from the dock. There will be drawings throughout the day for prizes sponsored by local merchants.

First Saturday Militia Muster and Training at Fort Mose @ Fort Mose Historic State Park

Visit Fort Mose on the first Saturday morning of each month and become immersed into the 18th century. The members of the Fort Mose Militia come together to practice firing drills and teach new Militiia members historic weapon use and safety. Visitors will experience historic weapon demonstrations including musket firing drills. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in the children's militia training, using wooden toy muskets and authentic uniform accessories. This experience will provide a wonderful photo opportunity and a one of a kind experience, in a Florida State Park!

Ranger Guided Sea Turtle Walk @ Sebastian Inlet State Park

Learn about Florida's endangered sea turtles and then take a nighttime walk on the beach to witness a mother loggerhead sea turtle lay her eggs in the warm beach sands of Sebastian Inlet State Park.

Additional Information:

A maximum of 6 reservations can be made per family. There are no group reservations. The program beach is an isolated area; once the beachwalk portion begins, individuals within the group are committed to stay together until the end of the program.

NO flash photography, flashlights or cell phone lights are allowed on the beach. There are no water or restroom facilities once on the beach.

Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Bring insect repellent. Wear dark-colored long pants and long sleeves if you are not tolerant of mosquitoes and no-see-ums.

This program may require an up-to three-mile walk on the beach.

Sebastian Inlet State Park will start taking sea turtle walk reservations on May 15, at 10:30 a.m. for June’s Turtle Walk programs. Sebastian Inlet State Park will start taking sea turtle walk reservations on June 15, at 10:30 a.m. for July’s Turtle Walk programs. The tours have limited space available. Reservations can be made between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Participants with reservations will meet on their scheduled night at the Sebastian Inlet Fishing Museum, 14251 North Highway A1A, Vero Beach, FL 32963. The program starts promptly at 9 pm.
