Eagle Viewing @ Oscar Scherer State Park

This weekly program is offered during bald eagle nesting season. Two nests are located in the park but the easiest to access is on the Green Trail. Once nest construction has begun, part of the trails are roped off per federal law. To view the eagles from a safe distance, a Volunteer will be manning a viewing station. A high-powered spotting scope to view the nest will be provided. The 20-minute walk to the eagle viewing station on the Green Trail from the Nature Center or campground is self-guided and trail maps can be obtained at the Ranger Station and Nature Center.

As you meander down the trail to the cow camp, you will travel back in time to 1876.

At the end of the trail you will find a Florida Cow Hunter in a frontier camp along the route of a cattle drive. He will be cooking, making coffee, tending to the cattle or just resting up until the next round up or drive. The cow hunter will be happy to share stories about what his life is like and the challenges he faces.

Join staff along paved trails and roads, learning about the park's unique natural and cultural history. The tour is approximately 2 hours long and may be too long or vigorous for young children or persons who are not able to handle cycling about 5-6 miles.

Swing your partner, do-si-do, and promenade down to The Barnacle for an outdoor contra dance held under a covered pavilion by Biscayne Bay! These fun and friendly dances are open to everyone and include a caller and a live acoustic band. The gates open at 6 p.m. Pre-dance instruction begins at 6:30pm, and dancing starts at 7 p.m.

On-street and off-street paid parking is available throughout Coconut Grove. Visitors with a Disabled Person Parking Permit may call the Ranger Station for additional parking information.

Paradise Park Remembered - Photographs by Bruce Mozert and Others @ Silver Springs State Park

Paradise Park was a segregated Florida attraction opened in 1949 by the owners of Silver Springs, the state’s oldest attraction, and operated by an African-American staff until 1969.

In conjunction with the Appleton Museum of Art's exhibit, Silver Springs State Park will host a selection of photographs from Paradise Park in the Education Center. The Education Center is open every day from 8:00 a.m. until sundown.

Also in the Education Center, current Silver Springs and former Paradise Park boat captain David Faison will walk visitors down memory lane every Tuesday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. sharing stories from his 58 years of service and taking questions.

To get to this exhibit at Silver Springs State Park, enter the park through the main entrance located at 5656 East Silver Springs Boulevard (State Road 40).

Paradise Park Remembered was organized by the Appleton Museum of Art and Lu Vickers on behalf of the late Bruce Mozert, in partnership with Silver Springs State Park, Friends of Silver Springs and Marion County Black Archives. The exhibition at the Appleton Museum features approximately 100 photographs taken by Mozert, former Silver Springs staff photographer, as well as snapshots from private collections and Marion County Black Archives.
