Enjoy the morning view Lake Osprey in the Nature Center.  The Volunteers running the program will be happy to answer any questions that you have about the park and surrounding area.  Feel free to bring a paper to read or feel free to browse our selection of guide books and informational resources.

Lu, the Hippopotamus' Birthday Celebration @ Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Park will celebrate Lu, the hippopotamus’ 56th birthday with two special birthday parties on Monday, January 26, 2016. Lu has been a long-time resident of Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and has fans around the world. People come from all over to help him celebrate his birthday. There is an international club for people who love hippos called the Hippo-Lot-of-Us Club. They have a website and members travel to visit hippos.  Every year members of Hippo-Lot-of-Us Club attend Lu’s birthday. Students from several area day care centers will join park staff in wishing Lu a Happy 55th Birthday. The students will be encouraged to join in singing a special birthday song written and performed by park volunteer Vicky Lozzia. (Every year Vicky adds another stanza for his latest birthday).

Songwriters at Sunset Concert Series @ Lovers Key State Park

Friends of Lovers Key, Inc. (FOLKS) has joined with The Americana Community Music Association (ACMA), to offer monthly free Acoustic concerts of all original music. The concerts take place in the large gazebo located on the beach. Seating is available for the first 80 people. Bring a chair for additional seating located on the beach near the Gazebo. Snacks and beverages will be available by donation. Proceeds will benefit FOLKS.

Come hear great original songs and the stories behind the songs, in an intimate “Bluebird Café” style.  The show will finish with a fabulous Lovers Key Sunset. The ACMA is a Fort Myers based organization that promotes local artists who write and sing their own original songs.

Paradise Park Remembered - Photographs by Bruce Mozert and Others @ Silver Springs State Park

Paradise Park was a segregated Florida attraction opened in 1949 by the owners of Silver Springs, the state’s oldest attraction, and operated by an African-American staff until 1969.

In conjunction with the Appleton Museum of Art's exhibit, Silver Springs State Park will host a selection of photographs from Paradise Park in the Education Center. The Education Center is open every day from 8:00 a.m. until sundown.

Also in the Education Center, current Silver Springs and former Paradise Park boat captain David Faison will walk visitors down memory lane every Tuesday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. sharing stories from his 58 years of service and taking questions.

To get to this exhibit at Silver Springs State Park, enter the park through the main entrance located at 5656 East Silver Springs Boulevard (State Road 40).

Paradise Park Remembered was organized by the Appleton Museum of Art and Lu Vickers on behalf of the late Bruce Mozert, in partnership with Silver Springs State Park, Friends of Silver Springs and Marion County Black Archives. The exhibition at the Appleton Museum features approximately 100 photographs taken by Mozert, former Silver Springs staff photographer, as well as snapshots from private collections and Marion County Black Archives.
