September 16, 2017 is International Coastal Cleanup Day! Each year during this event, hundreds of thousands of volunteers worldwide help to rid our nearshore lands and waterways of marine debris. Marine debris is not only unsightly but also very harmful to the sensitive Florida Keys’ ecosystems. Come learn a little about marine debris and help clean up the Channel 5 bridge located at MM 71. Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Staff will meet participants at the south parking area of the Channel 5 Bridge. Please park in the paved parking lot on the south side of the Channel 5 Bridge. After the cleanup, we will join several other cleanup groups at Long Key State Park for a hotdog and hamburger cookout to celebrate our hard work. Pre-registration is preferred.
Volunteers should be dressed for working in hot and sunny Key’s weather, closed toed shoes are required (no flip flops). Hats, sunscreen, and work gloves are recommended. Please bring a refillable water bottle. Water Coolers will be provided for refills. A vegetarian lunch option will be available. Upon registration please indicate if you would prefer a vegetarian lunch.
