Safety Updates

Florida State Parks will follow local orders requiring facial coverings or masks to provide for staff and visitor safety. These requirements vary from area to area. Our main priority is the safety of our guests and staff. We will continue to review operations on a daily basis and make additional operational changes as may be deemed necessary for protection of public health. Please review individual park pages for specific information for each location.

Limited Visitation at this Park

Effective Jan. 12, 2021: Bahia Honda State Park is open (see hours of operation and fee information below). Due to local orders, facial coverings are required inside buildings for staff and visitor safety. Due to limited day-use capacity, the park may close early and remain closed for several hours. Sandspur Beach remains closed for day use and camping during construction due to Hurricane Irma (see below for more information). The concession is fully open with limited services for snorkeling tours. Visitors are expected to maintain distances of at least six feet apart and limit groups to family members.

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any farther?”

Park Admission - Online Payment

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Along with its iconic Florida scenery — palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets — the park is known for balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented, and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.

Manager's Message

I’m inspired daily at Bahia Honda by simple things: the sound and sheer vastness of the ocean, watching the sunrise, walking the shoreline, and witnessing how it changes daily providing natural habitats for shorebirds and sea turtles. The history of this island during the Flagler era is a story everyone should know.

Stargazing at Bahia Honda

As the sun sets and the stars fill the night sky, the island of Bahia Honda becomes a magical place. During the day most folks are gazing upon the beautiful water or swimming in the sapphire waters, the night time will offer you a chance to discover the night sky above.
