In contrast to theme parks and beaches lies a rural Florida defined by a river that flows through the cultural and physical landscape of legends and song that tell the story of Florida. That river is the Suwannee, identified forever with the Old South by Stephen Foster's song "Old Folks at Home."

  • Are you planning a multi-day paddling trip on the Suwannee? The third river camp, located at Peacock Slough is open. With raised, screened sleeping platforms, hot showers and restrooms, you'll spend the night in comfort while you enjoy the Suwannee.

  • Safety News Complete this travel plan before starting your paddling trip. Leave it with someone who can contact officials if an emergency should arise. Also leave a folded copy on the dash of your vehicle to help rescue personnel if a search is needed.

    A Special Use Authorization is required before primitive camping on the river. Paddlers should contact the Suwannee River Water Management District for restrictions, access or special conditions.
