The first military unit consisting of all black soldiers, the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a serious matter of controversy and attention. The regiment was raised in the North during the civil war and was composed primarily of free blacksLewis N. Douglass and Charles Douglass, sons of the famous ex-slave and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass were among the recruits. The Fifty-fourth marched into the battle at what is now Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park late in the day on February 20th, 1864 yelling, “Three cheers for Massachusetts and seven dollars a month!" Along with the 35th United States Colored Troops, the Fifty-Fourth saved the Union army from complete disaster. They have been called by some the “heroes of the day” at least on the Union side of the battle. The regiment lost eighty-six men in the battle. Because of their many accomplishments throughout the Civil War, a war considered by most blacks to be a “white man’s war” and because of their bravery, dedication and honor shown during their fight for freedom, the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts remains the most famous black regiment of the Civil War more than a century later!

"There have been men who have proposed to me to return to slavery the black warriors of Port Hudson & Olustee to their masters to conciliate the South. I should be damned in time & eternity for doing so." - Abraham Lincoln, April 19, 1864 (Collected Works 7: 506-507)
