STATEMENT FROM FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (FDOT) SECRETARY STEPHANIE KOPELOUSOS & FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (FDEP) SECRETARY MICHAEL W. SOLE REGARDING SKYWAY FISHING PIER STATE PARK

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) are working together to continue the operation of the western piers of the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. In order to maintain public safety, FDOT and FDEP will close the eastern portions of the fishing piers which were built in 1954 and can no longer be safely maintained. Both agencies believe that this is the best decision to protect the community’s safety while allowing for continued recreational enjoyment. We are committed to working with the community to ensure this local recreational asset will continue to serve the needs of residents and visitors in the area.

Manager's Message

As of Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., there will no longer be recreational vehicles (RVs), large trucks or trailers permitted on the Skyway Fishing Piers. Beginning Friday, August 29, 2008, the east portions of the north and south piers will be closed indefinitely due to concerns for public safety.

Enjoy fishing or sightseeing on the Skyway fishing piers! Magnificent sunrises and sunsets can be viewed from the piers, which are open 24 hours, everyday of the year. Fishing supplies, snacks, drinks and bait are all available on both the north and south piers. Stop by the bait shop to pick up your free copy of the latest fishing regulations.

Please note that vehicles weighing over 12 tons are not allowed on the pier.

- Pete Krulder, Park Manager

Welcome to Skyway Fishing Pier State Park

When the new Sunshine Skyway bridge was built over Tampa Bay, connecting St. Petersburg with Sarasota, the old bridge was turned into the world's longest fishing pier. Anglers love being able to park their cars or campers within a few feet of their favorite fishing spot. The bridge is lighted at night, so anglers can see to rig a line, bait the hook, and get a good look at their catch. The light also attracts many species of fish after sundown. Common catches include snook, tarpon, grouper, black sea bass, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, sheepshead, red snapper, pompano, and many more. Snacks, drinks, bait, and fishing supplies are available. The pier is open 24 hours a day year-round. Located north and south of the Skyway Bridge on I-275 (U.S. 19).
