Welcome to our State Park!

Manager's Message

Fall is always an exciting time to visit the Savannas – now more than ever. Thanks to Tropical Storm Fay, the marsh is overflowing with water. Temperatures are finally cooling, making the park a perfect place for the many recreational and educational opportunities we are offering this season.

The park’s third annual photo contest makes the perfect excuse to explore the trails or marsh with your camera and catch a winning shot. Try coming out early: you might be the one to snap one of our bald eagles snatching a fish from the marsh. Entries are being accepted at the Education Center throughout the month of October.

Friends of Savannas is hosting another, great Halloween Haunted Hay Ride this year. Due to popular demand, we’re offering two nights of hayrides, mask making, pumpkin painting and more: Thursday, October 30 and Friday the 31st. Come in costume and enjoy a spooky night in the park. Reservations are required.

Canoeing or kayaking remain the best ways to experience the park, as high water keeps many trails too wet for most. If you would like to go hiking, stop by the Ed. Center for recommendations on dry trails. We’re offering full moon paddles during the fall and winter months – an experience you shouldn’t miss!

If you’re interested in learning more about the Savannas’ flora and fauna, call the Ed. Center to learn about our Fall Wildflower I.D. workshop (Oct. 11 and 12) and our monthly Frogwatch program.

As always, the Education Center is a great place to start your visit and learn more about the park. We look forward to seeing you here.

- Dan Griffin, Park Manager

Welcome to Savannas Preserve State Park

Freshwater marshes or "savannas" once extended all along Florida's southeast coast. Stretching more than 10 miles from Ft. Pierce to Jensen Beach, this preserve is the largest and most intact remnant of Florida's east coast savannas. A good place for visitors to start is the Environmental Education Center where they can learn about the importance of this unique and endangered natural system. Picnic tables are available near the center. Canoeing, kayaking, and fishing in the wetlands are popular activities. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers can enjoy the diversity of habitats this undisturbed area offers. Over eight miles of multi-use trails provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Guided walks and canoe trips are available by reservation. The Education Center is located in Port St. Lucie, two miles east of U.S. 1 on Walton Road.
