Manager's Message
Summer is a great time to enjoy the park and offers an opportunity for families to spend more time with each other. With the summer season, safety issues may often be overlooked. We all know that the two key ingredients for summer fun are water and sunshine; and both can have a negative impact on an individual's pursuit to have some “fun in the sun” if certain safety concerns are not addressed.
Water is a paradox: It can provide pleasure and can be dangerous at the same time. John U. Lloyd Beach State Park is a place for water-related activities, so please pay attention to the beach warning flags that are displayed for your benefit and know where your children are at all times. Visitors will also need to be aware of how fast weather conditions can change, especially during the afternoon hours. The heating of the day can trigger perfect conditions for thunderstorm and lightning activity. When you can count anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds between the flash and the bang you are not considered safe in an open area.
Sun is also a paradox: Although it can provide warmth and create what some might feel is the “perfect tan,” it is a fact that heat-related emergencies increase during the summer months. To avoid being a victim of heat stress, always keep yourself hydrated and use appropriate sunscreen. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water; by than it may be too late. You should also avoid strenuous exercise during the middle of the day.
With all this said, we hope that you have a safe and enjoyable visit to the park this summer!
Turtle nesting season is now in full swing. You may notice wooden markers that mark where turtles have nested. Please do not disturb these areas. Sea turtles are an endangered species and are protected by State and Federal laws. Thank you.
