Tarkiln Bayou Nature Walks

Walking, hiking

For most of the year at Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park, visitors can easily view carnivorous white-topped pitcher plants from the boardwalk over the wetlands.

But when the pitcher plants are not evident, two annual guided walks are an opportunity to learn about the park's many other native plants. The Red and Green Walk on Dec. 25 and the First Day Hike on Jan. 1 have become annual events for many families.

The guided walks offer visitors cooler weather and fewer bugs! Hikers learn about the native plants that occupy the wetlands as well as areas that are drier such as the pine flatwoods. Scavenger hunt sheets are given out not just for fun but to help us view plants and trees differently.

Visitors also learn about the turpentine industry when the guiding ranger brings their “cat face” and related materials. We always find something interesting to talk about and often see blooming wildflowers!

Both guided hikes are a great way for the family to get outdoors together and enjoy a few hours of nature, which has been proven to have health benefits.

Join us on one of our guided walks, or venture out to the park on your own to experience these treasures.
