Lake Griffin State Park

Date: October 4, 2014, 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Join Park Rangers on a guided paddle trip along the pristine Dead River that leads to Lake Griffin! This slow-moving river and the freshwater marsh ecosystem that surrounds it provide excellent opportunities for birding and wildlife observation. Lake Griffin State Park is home to many wildlife species including alligators, otters, turtles and a variety of bird and butterfly species. Some of the sought-after birds that paddlers have the potential to see include Purple Gallinules, Limpkins, Black-Crowned Night Herons, Wood Ducks, Glossy Ibises, Snowy Egrets, Belted Kingfishers and many more. The trip is limited to 12 vessels. Subject to availability, participants will have the option of a single person sit-on-top kayak or a 2 person canoe. The guided paddle trip is free but participants must pay the park entry fee and pre-registration is required. Please call 352-360-6760 to register. Participants should arrive at 8:30 a.m. in order to check-in and be issued paddling equipment and safety gear.
Participants should first check-in at the Ranger Station near the park entrance. Then park in the day-use area parking lot and walk to the canoe launch where the paddle trip will depart from at 9 a.m.
All participants are encouraged to bring sunscreen, bug repellent, plenty of water and wear attire appropriate for being outdoors and on the water.
Due to the approximately 2 mile paddling distance, the paddle trip may be strenuous. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed and children ages 6 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent and/or guardian.
All necessary paddling equipment and safety gear will be provided to registered participants.
The Florida Park Service is committed to providing accessible facilities and programs for all people. Should you require assistance to enable your participation, please contact Lake Griffin State Park at 352–360–6760.
