Manager's Message
Due to damage caused by past storms, the dock at Indian Key has sustained considerable structural damage. Currently, public access to the island is available only by canoe or kayak.
There is never a bad time to visit the island, but spring is particularly nice. You might catch a glance of leaping tarpons or spotted eagle rays, or, you might see flocks of migratory birds that are heading to their northern homes after the winter.
You can also walk the re-created streets of a town that existed here in the 1830s and enjoy the cultural landscape of this once thriving community. Come explore our 11-acre island while the temperatures are pleasant!
- Melba Nezbed, Park Manager
Welcome to Indian Key Historic State Park
In 1836, Indian Key became the first county seat for Dade County. At that time, this tiny island was the site of a lucrative business-salvaging cargo from shipwrecks in the Florida Keys. Accessible only by canoe or kayak, visitors come here to swim, sunbathe, and hike. Fishing is also a popular activity. Boat and kayak rentals are available from Robbie's Marina at (305) 664-9814. Located on the oceanside of U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 78.5.
