Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
About Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
A NOTE FROM THE MANAGER
Jim Gibson
On March 20th, we entered the spring season. And, although the air is still cooler and the bugs are not as much of a nuisance, there is a clear warming to the afternoon air. We welcome spring at the park for its sure signs of flowering paradise trees and fruiting wild tamarind. A slight increase in rains brings out many other flowers as well, including the endangered beach peanut and its extraordinary purple ground flower, nickerbean, with its terraced yellow flower, to name a very few. Gopher tortoises begin to show themselves more active during this season, emerging more frequently from their burrows and preparing for a long mating season. Speaking of turtles, on our adjacent beaches, loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles have begun their ancient ritual of laying eggs which initiates a two-month-long gestation period. This sea turtle season will last well into late fall. Spring migrations are evident both in the skies, with a thorough fanfare of warblers flitting through the park, and the raptors, such as the famous peregrine falcon, tight on their tails. And, migrations are also evident in the water, with manatee groups working their way, ever so gently munching on seagrass, into northern Florida. We welcome you to come experience these scenes, brought to you only through "...the Real Florida" in this small oasis of a state park left to us by the late Mr. Hugh Taylor Birch.
Guided Segway tours, kayak, bike, and skate rentals are available through the park's concession, M.Cruz Rentals. If you are interested in volunteering at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, or becoming part of our citizen support organization, the Friends of Birch State Park, Inc., or have any questions, please call the Ranger Station at (954) 564-4521.
