IT has started. For a couple of months Hontoon Island State Park will be experiencing construction upgrades. For visitor safety there will be occasional times during the construction when areas of the park will be temporarily closed. The closures could include the campground (tent and cabins), all trails, or the picnic area. The new play station is up and waiting for 5 to 12 year olds (recommended age by manufacturer) to give it a try.. Feel free to call (386)736-5309 during normal hours to check on current area closures before visiting. The ferry will run as normal and the boat docks will remain open as usual. The parking lot will have partial closures but limited parking spaces will be available at all times.

Canoe and kayak rentals are available on a first come first serve basis at Hontoon Island. Enjoy the three mile round trip hiking trail that leads to a large Indian mound. Bring your bicycles and ride over five miles of service roads in the center of the park. A trip to Hontoon Island is not complete until you spend a few minutes in the museum and Island store. The ferry, which brings you from the parking area to the island runs from 8:00 a.m. until one hour before sunset. There is no formal charge for park entry or the ferry ride although donations are gladly accepted. Tent camping and rustic cabins are open year around. Welcome to Hontoon Island State Park

This island, located in the St. Johns River in Volusia County, welcomes visitors to enjoy nature and history in quiet solitude. The island is accessible only by private boat or park ferry. Evidence of Native American habitation over thousands of years can be witnessed as visitors hike through the park. Stop in and walk through the impressive visitor center to learn more about the many inhabitants and uses of Hontoon Island over the years. Boating, canoeing, and fishing are popular activities and canoe rentals are available. Picnic areas include tables, grills, and a playground. Overnight boat slip rentals are also available. The park's ferry operates daily from 8:00 a.m. to one hour before sunset. Located six miles west of Deland off State Road 44.

Driving Directions

Hontoon Island is located west of DeLand off of State Road 44. Turn on County Road 4110 (Old New York Ave.), left if you are traveling west on 44, right if you are traveling east on 44. Follow County Road 4110 to County Road 4125 (Hontoon Road) make a left, go to River Ridge Road (continuation of County Road 4125) and make a left on to River Ridge Road. Our address is 2309 River Ridge Road.
