Fanning Springs State Park Photos

Between the gazebo and the river stands a majestic cypress tree shown in silhouette against a fading silvery sunset. While Fanning Springs is not known for exciting diving, instructors teach classes here and people will sometimes use the springs to check out their gear in preparation for more challenging dives. Most people are content to snorkel. With the river running high water backs up into the springs. The once dry bottom land adjacent to the springs vanishes under a sheet of water giving the place an entirely different look.

Growing on the big solid branches of Live Oak trees such as the one in the photo Resurrection Ferns are lush and green during periods of rain. After a few dry days they begin to dry out curling in on themselves looking like they havedied. But the next time it rains they are resurrected to their previous healthy looking state. During the summer the gazebo at the end of the boardwalk is one great place to watch the big sturgeon hurl themselves out of the river landing with a resounding slap. In this photo the big fish is off in the distance a bit and hard to see well. Maybe you should come out and see and hear them for yourself. Frozen in mid air this young man is caught between the diving platform he jumped off of and the chilly springs water below him.

One of the best things about fall is seeing the purple spikes of berries on the Beauty Berry bush. The rest of the year the shrubs are pretty much ho hum. But in the fall they definitely liven up the place. Our 200 yard long boardwalk leads from the swimming area to a gazebo on the Suwannee River. There are three overlooks along the way that allow time to sit enjoy the view. Fall colors can be hard to come by here but in this photo the red cypress needles are beautifully reflected in a mosaic of blues in the springs.

Looking across the river as the sun sets one can appreciate the subtle beauty of that twilight time found between day and night.
