Lovers Key State Park
Essential Eligibility Criteria


Great Outdoor Adventure Day Event

In order to participate in this event, you:

• Must have the ability to follow visual and/or verbal instructions independently or with the assistance of a companion.
• Must have the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoors for a period of up to 3-5 hours.
• Must have the ability to traverse wet and dry, sandy, uneven and unstable terrain for up to ¼ mile independently or with the assistance of a companion.
• Must have the ability to traverse pavement for up to ¼ miles independently or with the assistance of a companion.
• Must have the ability to stand on pavement or a firm, stable sandy area for up to 1 hour or with the assistance of a companion.
 

The following are optional programs being offered throughout the event:

Black Island Bike Tour
In order to participate in this program, you:

•  Must have the ability to follow verbal and/or visual instructions independently or with the assistance of a companion. 
•  Must have the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoors for a period of approximately 1 hour.
•  Riders under 16 years of age must have the ability to wear a helmet as per state law.
•  Total weight of user and gear may not exceed the manufacturer’s specifications.
•  Must have the ability to follow applicable traffic laws.
•  Must have the ability to independently control, maneuver, and maintain balance on the bike for the duration of the tour (approximately 1 hour).
 

Kayak/ Canoe Tour
In order to participate in this program, you:

•  Must have the ability to follow verbal and/or visual instructions independently or with the assistance of a companion. 
•  Must have the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoors for a period of approximately 45 minutes.
•  Must not exceed the manufacturer’s weight limit for the vessel (275 pounds for single kayak; 450 pounds for tandem kayak, 780 pounds for canoe).
•  Must have the ability to traverse uneven and unstable terrain independently or with the assistance of a companion for distances up to 100 feet.
•  Must have the ability to wear a properly fitted personal flotation device.
•  Must have the ability to exit the canoe/kayak independently or with the assistance of a companion or with the use of adaptive equipment.
•  Must have the ability to remain seated, maneuver, and balance independently or with the assistance of a companion or with the use of adaptive equipment.
•  Must have at least one person in the canoe/kayak with the ability to move it through the water in a stable manner for a distance of approximately 1 ½ miles and return it back to the launching area.
•  In the event of a capsize: One must have the ability to get out from under the watercraft, independently.
•  In the event of a capsize: One must have the ability to right oneself and remain face up in the water with the aid of a personal flotation device.

Fishing Clinic
In order to participate in this program, you:

•  Must have the ability to follow verbal and/or visual instructions independently or with the assistance of a companion. 
•  Must have the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoors for a period of approximately 1 hour.
•  Must have the ability to cast a fishing line/or hold a fishing pole weighing from ½ pound up to 3 pounds independently or with the assistance of a companion.

Cast Netting Program
In order to participate in this program, you:

•  Must have the ability to follow verbal and/or visual instructions independently or with the assistance of a companion. 
•  Must have the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoors for a period of approximately 1 hour.
•  Must have the ability to traverse uneven and unstable terrain independently or with the assistance of a companion for distances up to 100 feet.
•  Must have the ability to lift and throw a net weighing between 5 to 10 pounds independently or with the assistance of a companion or with the use of adaptive equipment.

Walk on the Wild Side
In order to participate in this program, you:

•  Must have the ability to follow verbal and/or visual instructions independently or with the assistance of a companion. 
•  Must have the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoors for a period of approximately 1 hour.
•  Must have the ability to traverse wet, sandy, uneven and unstable terrain for up to 1 ½ miles independently or with the assistance of a companion.
