Manager's Message
There are some big happenings here at Curry Hammock. First, a beach enhancement project is underway, this will bring in more than 27 million pounds of sand to replace the hard fill along the oceanfront. There will be a dune system along with walkovers near the campground, and a flat beach in front of the picnic area. This project is expected to be complete by the start of turtle nesting season, May 1.
The second piece of news is an agreement has been reached with the local government to allow the campground to be open during the summer months. Reservations will be available through Reserve America.
Finally, planning is well underway for the Tenth Annual Florida Keys Birding and Wildlife Festival, September 26-28. The event will once again be anchored at Curry Hammock, and will include an environmental fair, family day, and evening program at the park on Saturday, September 27. Details will be posted as they become available at www.keysbirdingfest.org.
While waiting for the spring beach, summer camping, and fall birdfest, there is still lots to do in the park, with evening programs, weekly ranger-guided walks and kayak trips, and lots of "…the Real Florida".
- Ken Troisi, Park Manager
Welcome to Curry Hammock State Park
This park is made up of a group of islands in the Middle Keys, with public access to swimming, a playground, picnic tables, grills, and showers on the ocean side of Little Crawl Key. The hardwood hammocks found on these tropical islands support one of the largest populations of thatch palms in the United States. Mangrove swamps, seagrass beds, and wetlands provide vital habitats for tropical wildlife.
