Keynote Speaker
Marjorie Turnbull, Executive Director, Tallahassee Community College Foundation, will speak on the value of fund raising to support government programs such as Florida state parks. As a former Leon County Commissioner and State Representative, Ms. Turnbull has a unique perspective on the relationship between public agency needs and private funding. Since she became Executive Director of the Foundation, its assets have increased from $250,000 to $6.5 million, including 70 endowed scholarships.
Florida State Parks Foundation
Sue Acri, CFRE, Senior Vice President and Jason R. Zajac, CFRE, Vice President, Ketchum, Inc. the oldest consulting firm in the fundraising business will be talking about its contract with the Division to assist with the formation of a new State Parks Foundation. This foundation will focus on Endowment and major gift fundraising. The firm will be talking with CSOs over the next few months about this exciting new opportunity for developing support for state parks.

Title: Bureau of Parks District 1 Panel

Abstract: Too often it seems the CSO take on the role of park planning and development; too often it seems the Park management is content to let the CSO take on this role. What’s the real CSO mission and what can the group provide? “A good CSO will eventually become an integral part of the total management team for the park”, CSO Handbook, Dec. 2004.

Abstract: The Citizen Support Organizations in District 2 cover a broad scope of interests and personalities. From the largest group to the smallest, each one makes its significant contribution to the parks and resources of our district. Some of our organizations focus on large fundraising projects to support large-scale improvements to their park, while others offer valuable on-the-ground assistance in establishing, planning and coordinating special events which foster community spirit and an appreciation for Florida’s natural and cultural resources. Every contribution made by our CSOs is a gift to our parks and the citizens of Florida. In this session we’ll talk about the nature of these gifts, the effort that goes into giving them, and what direction our future efforts should take to ensure that meaningful contributions continue to be made by our CSOs.

Abstract: Join Larry Fooks, Bureau Chief, Valinda Subic, Assistant Bureau Chief, and Melissa Tyrone, Park Programs Development Specialist to celebrate your organization’s successes over the past year and to talk about the state of the CSO program. You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about how the District office works with your park and CSO, up and coming initiatives, and budget issues. Be sure to bring a list, because a large part of the session will be dedicated to answering your questions!

Presenters: Mike Murphy, Robert Wilhelm, & Carol Imbriani
Abstract: The presentation made by District 4 will be focused on the topic of motivation. Teams will be made and a game of multiple choice will be conducted, using categories of motivation such as Ideas, True Motivation and Feeling Like Winners. The game will include statements about motivation to help reinforce the concepts. In addition, the idea of networking to share talents against needs will be discussed. A small survey will be distributed with the goal of collecting needs and talents; and matching those up on a spreadsheet for later distribution.

Abstract: Learn how your CSO can support Park Programming whether it is through Ranger or Volunteer-led programs, trail and kiosk exhibits, special events or even Visitor Center development. We’ll highlight some past successes, as well as discuss the process for working with park, district and central office staff and where to find project guidelines and procedures.

Abstract: Planning for new or expanded activities and new facilities in the parks is a team effort that involves park CSOs as well as all of the Division's bureaus and offices, and a host of other agencies, organizations and individuals. Part of the Division's efforts to identify funding, staffing, resource management and park development needs for the future is its park planning program and the creation of individual management plans for each of the parks in the system. This session will provide an overview of the planning process used to create the management plans, and will discuss how CSOs can work with Division staff to assure that new development projects the organization is interested in are fully considered in the park plans.

Abstract: Learn techniques and campaign strategies from our Friends at MacArthur Beach State Park. Consultant Peggy Calhoun, ACFRE, will co-present with Friends Chair Ted Thoburn and Park Manager Terry Couillette. Topics include timing, campaign strategies, volunteer recruitment, and prospect cultivation. Join us as we learn firsthand about the steps and initiatives this team took to assure a successful campaign. This informative session will conclude with questions and answers.

Abstract: I will introduce what community foundations are all about and how they improve the quality of life in their area. There are over 650 community foundations nationally (25 in Florida) and they have accumulated billions of dollars in assets and donate millions in earnings. Title: Initiating an Archaeological Project
Presenter: Steve Martin
Abstract: Florida's rich cultural heritage extends some 12,000 years ago and many parks have important archaeological sites that remain un-surveyed. Unit Management Plans frequently require a park to conduct an archaeological survey as an important resource management tool. This session provides valuable information on the different kinds of archaeological surveys, how to fund them, how archaeological surveys can be good "partnering projects", and what we can learn about archaeological resources that can support your park's interpretive program.

Abstract: This session covers all of the CSO basics. Material is based on the Florida Department of Environmental Protection CSO Handbook. Program includes role of the CSO, management of a CSO, reports, policies and programs. Required for all Park Managers with a new CSO or who have moved to a park and are managing their first CSO. This session is also for new CSO officers and directors.
