A small amphitheater, built as a Scout project, is located in the park area next to the Visitor Center.

Bicycling

Bicycling

Bicycling and rollerblading are popular activities for this paved trail, which is mostly rural, but there are several town street crossings. A bike shop across the street from the Milton Trailhead rents, repairs and sells bicycles. Bicycle racks are located at both the Milton and Visitor Center trailheads. Trail users of all experience levels and fitness will find this trail offers an easy, pleasant trip out into the countryside.

There is so much to see during spring and fall bird migration periods that guided birdwatching programs are hosted annually by the trail's citizen support organization, Blackwater Heritage Trail, Inc.

Blackwater Heritage Trail, Inc., the trail’s citizen support organization, operates a part-time, volunteer-staffed concession at the Visitor Center where snacks and souvenirs may be purchased. Hours may vary.

Hiking is permitted on the entire length of the trail.

Horse/Equestrian Trail

Horse/Equestrian Trail

An unpaved equestrian trail parallels the paved trail and equestrians may use the paved trail or unpaved shoulder at their discretion; bridges are shared by all trail users. Equestrian use is prohibited on the Military Heritage Trail. The Equestrian Trailhead on Munson Highway (CR191) provides parking for horse trailers and oversized vehicles, covered picnic benches and potable water, as well as water for horses.

Interpretive Exhibit

The City of Milton established a "Heritage Plaza" as a visitor destination beside the Milton Trailhead. The Plaza features the six flags that have at one time flown over this part of Florida and a plaque with an account of the trail corridor's railroad history. Additional signage along the trail highlights points of interest and natural resources.

Although the trail is fully paved, trail users enjoy riding "fat tire" bikes on this multi-use trail.

Parking is available at all of the trailheads and the Munson Highway/Equestrian Trailhead has room for horse trailer parking.

Pets

Well behaved dogs are allowed on the trail with a maximum six-foot, hand-held leash. Owners are requested to walk their dogs near the edge of the trail, for the safety of all trail users.

Some covered picnic tables are located at the Milton and Munson Highway (Equestrian) trailheads.

Some covered picnic tables are located at the Milton and Munson Highway (Equestrian) trailheads. There are 12 (uncovered) picnic tables and two barbeque grills in the park area beside the Visitor Center. You will also find both covered and uncovered benches at various points along the trail.

A playground designed suitable for ages 2-12 is located at the Visitor Center Trailhead.

Restrooms are available at the Southern and Milton trailheads and the Visitor Center. There is an accessible portable toilet located near the four-mile marker and waterless restroom facilities have been placed at the six and eight-mile points of the trail.

Inline skaters and riders of specialty cycles find this paved, mostly level trail is perfect for long or short excursions along a naturally beautiful, scenic path.

Blackwater Heritage Trail, Inc., the trail’s citizen support organization, operates a part-time concession at the Visitor Center where snacks and souvenirs may be purchased. A meeting room is available for rent here and quad cycles and adult tricycles also may be rented with prior arrangements. Hours may vary, however a trail ranger is on duty daily from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., CST, with a contact number posted at the Visitor Center. Please contact the trail manager at (850) 983-5338 to inquire about renting specialty cycles or reserving the meeting room.

The paved, mostly level surface offers an ideal venue for walkers and runners of all fitness levels.

Water fountains are located at the Southern and Milton trailheads, at the Visitor Center and the Munson Highway/Equestrian Trailhead. No potable water is available north of the Munson Highway Trailhead, so trail users should carry ample water.

The trail is wheelchair accessible. Motorized wheelchairs and other personal mobility devices are permitted on the trail, if required.
