Manager's Message
Bald Point State Park has burned over 1,000 acres this season. The areas burned have been in the northern portion of the park, stretching from Ochlockonee Bay down the entire length of Chaires Creek. Through many years of research and burning in the park service, we have learned that mimicking naturally occurring fires obtains a higher diversity of plant and animal life while reducing fuels that could cause wildfires.
If you enjoy hiking or bicycling, Bald Point has many trails to explore. The blue blaze trail system is closed at this time due to construction of additional park facilities. Any of the other park trails can still be utilized. For canoeing, we have many freshwater lakes, tidal creeks and Ochlockonee and Apalachee Bays. The fall months are an excellent time to catch many different fish species at the park. The first sign of cold weather stimulates fish to fatten themselves for the winter and they go into their annual feeding frenzies. Red fish and trout are feeding in the shallows and can be caught from our small fishing pier. Morning and evening times seem to offer the best results for fishing.
The park opens at 8:00am and closes at sundown. If you wish to fish later into the evening or earlier then 8:00am you can do this by purchasing a Florida State Park annual entrance pass. These passes can be purchased at Ochlockonee River State Park. Just call 850-962-2771 between 3:00pm – 5:00pm daily.
If you enjoy birding Bald Point is one of the very best places in the southeast to view the Neotropical bird migration. These migratory birds stop at the park to take advantage of the local food and water supplies before they make the long flight across the Gulf of Mexico to their wintering grounds in Central and South America. Many different types of raptors also arrive in the area to prey on the smaller birds. This Migration should peak after the first cold front in September.
Biting insects are always present, so if you plan to visit us, please come prepared with insect repellent. If you would like to check the results of water testing for beaches and swimming anywhere in Florida log onto http://esetappsdoh.doh.state.fl.us/irm00beachwater/
Please visit us at Bald Point; enjoy the natural beauty and a multitude of recreational opportunities. Thank you
