Manager's Message
What better way to enjoy the winter season than snuggled up on your beach chair along the tropical shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean here at Long Key State Park? Since the temperatures have finally dropped to a comfortable 70 to 80 degrees, we are now thoroughly enjoying this beautiful cooler weather.
We offer a little for everyone as the mangrove habitat of Long Key provides a unique canoeing experience and the calm waters surrounding the island provide a great place for kayaking. Many species of fish are found in the lagoon system and gamefish, including bonefish, are a popular catch for the flats fisherman along the shoreline. Also, our nature trail takes you through several different ecosystems while immersing you in the native flora and fauna of the Florida Keys.
The variety of birds that inhabit our shoreline includes herons, egrets, willets, sandpipers, plovers, terns, and seagulls just to name a few. You might even get a chance to admire the migrating spoonbills as they forage in the shallows of our shoreline and the mangrove lagoon.
Whether camping with us or just spending the day, there are plenty of great ways to get outdoors and see what “…the Real Florida” has to offer at Long Key State Park.
Please check at the Ranger Station for any guided interpretive programs.
Hope to see you soon.
- Catherine Close, Park Manager
Welcome to Long Key State Park
The Spanish named this island "Cayo Vivora" or Rattlesnake Key because its shape resembles a snake with its jaws open. In the early 20th century, Long Key was the site of a luxurious fishing resort that was destroyed during the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Today, visitors can explore this island by canoeing through a chain of lagoons or hiking two land-based trails. The Golden Orb Trail leads visitors through five natural communities to an observation tower that provides a panoramic view of the island and its profusion of plant and animal life. Some of the best bonefishing in the Keys is found here. Full-facility campsites overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Located at Mile Marker 67.5, 67400 Overseas Highway.
